    Biography/Administrative History

    Jeffrey Root worked for Southern Pacific for over thirty two years in the field of records management. He was assistant chief clerk in the Operating Department of the Southern Pacific Company in San Francisco from 1984 until 1990, when the position was abolished.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The material in the Jeffrey "Jeff" Root Collection mainly consists of documents and correspondence from Southern Pacific's Passenger Traffic Department. Jeff Root was the assistant chief clerk in the operating department in the 1980s. He was interested in Southern Pacific passenger traffic service, and its decline due to increasing financial losses. The focus of Mr. Root's collection is on Southern Pacific's attempts to secure regulatory authority to discontinue its passenger train service in the 1960s and early 1970s. The records are arranged into 3 series: Series 1. General manager of passenger and government traffic Robert Max Jochner Subseries 1. Discontinuance files Subseries 2. Subject files Series 2. Subjects The following material has been removed from the Jeffery Root Collection and added to the Library’s collections: 608 2x2 slides taken between 1970 and 1974 by Jeff Root, tickets, maps, track charts, drawings, employee timetables, public timetables, menus, posters, sketches, a painting, photographs, matchbooks, and travel bags.
