Abstract: The Captain Clifton Curtis papers (SAFR 14304, HDC 96) contains the papers of Captain Curtis while he was Master of the steamships
WEST KATAN, WEST ERRAL and SUSQUEHANNA during the years 1919 to 1923 and 1925 to 1927. The papers consist of correspondence
regarding financial settlements for accounts, accidents, bills, invoices, radio grams, and payroll for the steamships. Other
correspondences include communication with the Customs and Health Departments, officials for shipping and port entry and discussion
of deserters. This collection has been processed to the collection level and is open for use without restriction.

Historical or Biographical Note
Captain Clifton Curtis was born June 4, 1858 in Searsport, Waldo, Maine. His parents were Captain Samuel Curtis and Elizabeth
Jane Griffin. Curtis married Evelena G. Blethen on November 19, 1888 in Searsport. He died June 1, 1928 in San Pedro, California.
