Biography/Administrative History
Charles Tenney Jackson was born in St. Louis, Missouri but grew up in Nebraska. He became a printer and journalist and worked
at various times in Chicago, Milwaukee and San Francisco. He left that city after the 1906 earthquake, and was living in New
Orleans by 1910, when his novel set in San Francisco, The Day of Souls, was published. He was awarded second prize, O. Henry
Memorial Award for short stories, 1921. He married Carlotta Weir in 1919 in Chicago, and they lived in New Orleans until moving
to Miami, Florida about 1930. Charles died in Coral Gables in 1955, and Carlotta in Florida in 1958.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection includes two items. One is Charles Tenney Jackson's unpublished (and final) autobiographical work, The Cloudcapped
Towers (1954), with his corrections and annotations (204 pages.) The second item is his wife Carlotta "Lottie" Aite Weir
Jackson's scrapbook, which includes news clippings and a few letters and chiefly documents her radio work in Miami, Florida
with WIOD and WQAM as well as her theatrical performances, and the couple's travels in New Orleans, North Carolina, Mobile,
Washington, DC, Kingston, Jamaica, and Havana.
The Cloudcapped Towers appears to continue C. T. Jackson's autobiographical The Buffalo Wallow (1953); his travels take him
from the Midwest to San Francisco. The Cloudcapped Towers closes with Tenney's account of the 1906 earthquake and fire (which
he had described in his 1910 novel, The Day of Souls) and his subsequent removal to New Orleans.
