Abstract: The Nicholas Beck collection on Budd Schulberg consists of material relating to Budd Schulberg (1914-2009)--the American screenwriter, television producer, and novelist--collected by Nicholas Beck (1932-2017). The collection includes material on Budd Schulberg's life, family, and works; the Watts Writers Workshop -- a creative writing group initiated by Budd Schulberg following the 1965 Watts Riots; correspondence between Beck and Schulberg's extended family; archival documents by and about Budd's father, studio executive B. P. Schulberg; and material on Hollywood history and Schulberg's contacts in and outside of the film industry, including F. Scott Fitzgerald. The collection also holds material relating to Nicholas Beck's life and works, including notes and drafts of Beck's book Budd Schulberg: A Bio-bibliography, published in 2001. Nicholas (Nick) Beck was a graduate of Los Angeles City College and UCLA; professor at California State University, Los Angeles; sports writer; book and Hollywood memorabilia collector; and Budd Schulberg's biographer and bibliographer. Types of documents found in the collection include correspondence, photographs, manuscripts, notes and research, published material, film posters, moving images, audio recordings, and memorabilia.

Scope and Contents

The Nicholas Beck collection on Budd Schulberg consists of material relating to Budd Schulberg (1914-2009)--the American screenwriter, television producer, and novelist--collected by Nicholas Beck (1932-2017). The collection includes material on Budd Schulberg's life, family, and works; the Watts Writers Workshop -- a creative writing group initiated by Budd Schulberg following the 1965 Watts Riots; correspondence between Beck and Schulberg's extended family; archival documents by and about Budd's father, studio executive B. P. Schulberg; and material on Hollywood history and Schulberg's contacts in and outside of the film industry, including F. Scott Fitzgerald. This binder includes a list compiled by Nicholas Beck of all of Budd Schulberg's first magazine appearances attached to a copy of a draft biography of Budd Schulberg including footnotes. In addition, there is an incomplete list drawn up by Beck of his personal collections relating to Budd Wilson Schulberg (Budd Schulberg). In addition, there are many original legal documents, letters, telegrams, scripts and screenplays, and loan statements relating to Benjamin Percival Schulberg's activity in Paramount Pictures, B. P. Schulberg Productions Ltd., copyright concerns with screenplays, and in relation to his separation from his first wife (Budd Schulberg's mother) Adeline "Ad" Schulberg. There are also numerous photographs and copies of photographs of B. P. Schulberg, Adeline "Ad" Schulberg, and B. P. Schulberg's colleagues. There are copies of clippings of newspaper articles relating to B. P. Schulberg and the Jewish families involved in early Hollywood. There are printed copies of webpages showing many of these original documents for sale. There are also letters and telegrams discussing Budd Schulberg's relationship with his father.

This binder includes Nicholas Beck's edited bibliography of Budd Schulberg's works. There are also articles and interviews about Budd Schulberg's experiences at Dartmouth College and working on The Dartmouth, the college's newspaper. There are also copies of the Budd Schulberg Papers finding aid from Princeton University's Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. There is a copy of search results in the Dartmouth Library's catalog for author Budd Schulberg. In addition, there is correspondence about Budd Schulberg's 90th birthday party. There are numerous biographical articles about Budd Schulberg, particularly of his experiences growing up in Hollywood. There are also biographies and obituaries for other prominent screenwriters and actors/actresses.

There is a microcassette and letter of Budd Schulberg's speech in Paris. There are numerous webpage printouts of Budd Schulberg's books for sale, and numerous short stories written by Budd Schulberg. There are various articles about boxing and interviews with Budd Schulberg. There are some webpage printouts about Nicholas Beck's book Budd Schulberg: A Bio-Bibliography (2001). In addition, there is a great deal of correspondence between Budd Schulberg, Nicholas Beck, and others.

This binder includes many photos of the Schulberg family and Budd Schulberg at various events. It also includes scene stills and movie flyers of the films Winter Carnival (1939), Weekend for Three (1941), Government Girls (1943), and City Without Men (1943). There are flyers, articles, and photographs about the Watts Writers' Workshop. There is an original copy of the booklet about the Screen Actors Guild amended Rule 16 effective in 1954. There are magazines about the movies and theater performances of What Makes Sammy Run?, On the Waterfront, The Disenchanted, and A Face in the Crowd. There is a copy of "Hollywood Scriptwriter.com" magazine with a special article about Budd Schulberg. Budd Schulberg's Films and Legacy 1931-2013

Scope and Contents

This binder includes numerous black and white negatives, black and white still prints, and color still prints of Budd Schulberg and others left unidentified. In addition, there are numerous printouts and clippings of articles critiquing and analyzing a number of films that Budd Schulberg worked on including Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today (1948), On the Waterfront (1954) and Wind Across the Everglades (1958). There are copies of Nicholas Beck's correspondence with many of Budd Schulberg's family members about the review articles and family history. There is also some memorabilia of Julian "Bud" Lesser. There are numerous pictures of the film and actors in Little Orphan Annie (1938) and Wind Across the Everglades (1958). There are articles commemorating blacklisted, screenwriter Richard Collins. There are also numberous articles commemorating Budd Schulberg upon his death. The last folder includes a copy of a 1931 edition of "The Dartmouth" newspaper.

Scope and Contents

This binder includes interviews and correspondence with Budd Schulberg. There is also email correspondence about Nicholas Beck's book Budd Schulberg: A Bio-Bibliography (2001). There are articles and reviews about the adaptations of Frank Loesser's musicals. There is an obituary for Phil Gersh, one of the leading Hollywood agents in the 1940s and 1950s. This is an article remembering Robert Kennedy. There are numerous articles and correspondence commemorating Budd Schulberg including an article by Aaron Brookner called "Budd Schulberg's Last Fight." There are articles about the controversies around, the research behind, and the making of On the Waterfront (1954). This binder includes a variety of articles and some email correspondence Nicholas Beck had about the silent and golden film eras and the actors, screenwriters, and performers of those decades, including Diana Serra Cary, Charlie Chaplin, Christopher Trumbo, and Al Bowlly, among many others. There is a transcript for a speech Budd Schulberg gave about novelist Jim Jones. There are articles about other writers such as Harper Lee and Gore Vidal. There are also articles and email correspondence about Schulberg family history - past and present. There are articles about Budd Schulberg's film work during and after WWII, his reasons for testifying for the Committee of UnAmerican Affairs, and the production of a revised 'chamber musical production' of What Makes Sammy Run?. There are flyers from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. There is also email correspondence Nicholas Beck had about editing his book. Scope and Contents

This binder includes many articles written in memory of Budd Schulberg, and/or recounting experiences with him. One piece is written by film director Aaron Brookner who has been working on a documentary about Budd Schulberg. Another article talks about Thomas Hanley's life after the filming of On the Waterfront (1954). Other articles look at F. Scott Fitzgerald's legacy and work. There is a review written by Budd Schulberg about the facsimile of The Great Gatsby published by Matthew Bruccoli in 1975. There is another article discussing the reasons for the disappointing film adaptations of Fitzgerald's works. In addition, there are various articles, bulletins, photographs, and ticket stubs for the films and theater performances of Budd Schulberg's works.

Scope and Contents

This binder includes correspondence between Nicholas Beck, Sandra Schulberg, and Chris O'Sullivan, and print outs of biographical information about Sandra Schulberg. This binder also includes a peer-edited version of the proposal written by Sandra Schulberg of the restoration of the film Nuremberg - Its Lesson for Today (1948). Some correspondence discusses edits and revisions to the proposal. There are also print-outs of foreign-language translations of Budd Schulberg's books for sale. A great quantity of the correspondence discusses the acquisition of items about and relating to the Schulberg family, principally Budd Schulberg, from various sellers.

Scope and Contents

This binder includes numerous printed webpages of pictures, original letters and books for sale written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Budd Schulberg. There are also printed webpages of histories of the Bustanoby Family in New York City and of items for sale that they had owned. There are lists of the first silent films and their preservation. There are notices of film showings and events at which Budd Schulberg was speaking. There are small life histories of Geraldine Brooks (Budd Schulberg's second wife).
