He was the college’s third president, and at the time of his appointment he was the youngest person to hold the position in the history of The Claremont Colleges. Earning his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, Dr. Ellsworth’s career consisted of both teaching and administration at institutions across the country. Some of these have included Penn State University, Sarah Lawrence College, and his alma mater the University of Chicago. While at Pitzer, he “initiated one of the earliest culture-based language learning programs in association with ISA International, a Tokyo-based company.”
Dr. Ellsworth resigned from the college in 1991, after which he became president of the “…Independent Colleges of Southern California, an association of private institutions of higher education.” He has served as an academic and administrator at many diverse institutions.
