FIELDWORK

Scope and Content of Series

Series 2) FIELDWORK: Arranged in three subseries by location/expedition: A) Mexico, B) Papua New Guinea, and C) Italy.
A) Mexico: Materials related to Lola Romanucci and Ted Schwartz's fieldwork research in Chiconcuac, rural Mexico, conducted under the guidance of German philosopher Erich Fromm in 1958. Included are the project proposals for the study, field notes and journals, transcripts from interviews conducted during the expedition, photographs, and materials relating to Romanucci-Ross's book, Conflict, Violence and Morality in a Mexican Village. Arranged alphabetically. Dates of materials are primarily from 1958 to 1961.
B) Papua New Guinea: Includes Lola and Ted Schwartz's field notes from their three-year expedition funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, running notes (diary accounts and commentary on daily life), photographs and slides, maps, and village kinship and linguistics notes. Also included are collected materials relating to Margaret Mead, who oversaw their fieldwork. These materials date primarily from 1963-1969 with some further writings that resulted from the study.
C) Italy: Includes background material on Ascoli Pisceno, notebooks, photographs, maps, and language and dialect studies. Materials date from 1971-1987.

Series 3) PROFESSIONAL PAPERS: Arranged in three subseries: A) Conferences and Teaching, B) Writings, C) Subject and Research Files.
A) Conferences and Teaching: Includes both handwritten and typescript drafts of Romanucci-Ross's lectures, talks, class notes, seminar and conference materials related to anthropological meetings.
B) Writings: A small selection of drafts of her essays.
C) Subject and Research Files: Arranged in alphabetical order by subject. These consist primarily of Romanucci-Ross's handwritten topical notes relating to medical anthropology, ethnobotany and ethnobiology, mental illness, shamanism, voodoo, and various other topics at the crossroads of psychiatry, medicine and culture.
