Abstract: Arnold Joseph Kouw began working for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1945. He worked as a brakeman, switchman, and conductor, briefly in Texas, but for the majority of his career he was stationed in California. When passenger service transferred to Amtrak in 1971, Mr. Kouw continued his career as a conductor until 1986. Mr. Kouw compiled this leather-bound notebook for reference use. It contains useful information about Southern Pacific Railroad train orders, accounting, train operation, siding and capacity for various locations in California, Nevada and Utah. It also includes drawings of various mileposts and other locations, including Reese, Bagley, Promontory Point, Saline, Colin, Midlake, Engle, and Lakeside. Shows placement of signals, telephones, car sidings, and stations at these locations. Also includes a list of important abbreviations and the meanings of various whistle signals and train lights.
