Scope and Content

Surrounding the family photo, and throughout the album, are numerous small photos (approx. 25 xc 19 mm) of her father, her husband, Lemuel Goldwater, whom she married in 1898 (1900?), and other family and friends, many of which appear to have been taken in an early version of the "photo booth." Elma Yetta Cohen, photographed at age "16 months, 3 days," may have been a cousin of Hortense. There is a view of the Westlake Park boathouse in Los Angeles, possibly nearby the Westlake home of Lemuel and Hortense in which they lived during the early years of their marriage, and where the first of their two sons, Jerrold, was born in 1901. There are many photos of Hortense with her girlfriends, often in costumes, including several in blackface, and Spanish dress; one of the blackface photos records a vaudeville skit "Rough House," performed on Feb. 21, 1901 at the Concordia Club, a social club for the Jewish elite, founded in Los Angeles in 1891. Other photos show her father with his business associates, and her father and mother on the occasion of her father's 66th birthday, Feb. 23, 1900. There are two photographs of Hortense in her wedding dress and veil; photos of her home [?], including both exterior and interior shots; and two snapshots of her sons, Jerrold and Richard. The album records many of the trips and family vacations Hortense took between 1898 and 1900; places she visited include Long Beach, Santa Monica, Coronado, Mission Heights in San Diego, and Catalina during July and August of 1900, where they swam, visited Seal Rocks, sailed past Camp Banning, and photographed the torpedo boat, USS Farragut. She also visited San Francisco's Chinatown, and Monterey and Carmel; included are several historic photos of the Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, and the Mission San Carlos Borromeo in Carmel. Near Pasadena, Hortense and her friends take the Mt. Lowe narrow-gauge railway to Ye Alpine Tavern, hike and picnic in Millard Canyon, and visit the San Gabriel Mission. One photo records President McKinley's visit to Los Angeles on May 8, 1901, and his ride past the Friday Morning Club in a rose-covered carriage in the Fiesta de Los Angeles parade. Also included is a photo of the Cohn-Goldwater & Co. building, which housed the garment manufacturing company her husband joined in 1899, in partnership with Morris Cohn.
