Scope and Contents
The Dias Photographic Collection contains more than 30,000 prints, slides, and negatives of photographs taken by professional
photographer Manuel Dias. Dias worked for the Modesto Bee and the Stanislaus County Office of Education as an aerial photographer,
and maintained his own private photography business in Modesto, California. The aerial photography component includes photographs
that depict the agriculture, industry, irrigation, recreation, roadways, schools, and urban areas of the San Joaquin Valley.
The Portuguese culture component includes photographs that depict Portuguese culture in the Azores, Portugal, Madeira, California,
and Hawaii, with a focus on farming, seafaring, bullfighting, and portraiture.

Scope and Contents
There are 4,304 color slides in the Dias Photographic Collection, Portuguese Culture Portfolio Slide and Sound Features Section,
taken from 1964-1998 in Portugal, Azores Islands, Madeira, and California,by Manuel Peixoto Dias. These color slides capture
the geography, social life and customs of the Portuguese so important to the study of that colorful and transported culture.
Of the 4,304 color slides, 3,297 are housed in small slide boxes or in 18 slide carousels for easy access and are categorized
by various Portuguese activities. The other 1007 color slides are found in 16 slide carousels and are accompanied by sound
narration (audio-tapes) in Portuguese (5) and English (33) for use in travelogue presentations.
