Biographical / Historical

Joan M. Schaefer (1921-2017) was Dean of Women 1955-1992 within the USC Office of Student Affairs. Known as "Dean Joan," she was described as a beacon for students seeking advice, a listening ear and a genuine friend. Schaefer had an open-door policy, and welcomed walk-ins from all students, including many men.
After her retirement Schaefer continued her involvement with USC Mortar Board, a national honor society that at one time was exclusively composed of women. She also remained active in USC's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, which honors top USC undergraduates in the arts and sciences.
