Abstract: Papers of ethnographer Paul Kutsche, who taught at the Department of Anthropology, Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The collection, covering the years 1980-2002, includes correspondence relating to sexual orientation non-discrimination policy
in higher education in the United States. The collection includes documents relating to both the Colorado referendum known
as Amendment 2, and the Grand Rapids, Michigan, failed ballot initiative to eliminate rights based upon sexual orientation.
The collection also contains correspondence with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, anthropologist Ralph Bolton, psychologist
Gregory M. Herek, and political scientist David M. Rayside. There are also clippings, lists, writings by Kutsche, reference
materials, agendas, notes, flyers, questionnaires, and course syllabi.
The collection is open to researchers. There are no access restrictions.
The collection comprises the papers of ethnographer Paul Kutsche, who taught at the Department of Anthropology, Colorado College,
Colorado Springs, Colorado. The collection, covering the years 1980-2002, contains correspondence related to sexual orientation
non-discrimination policy in higher education in the United States. The collection includes documents pertaining to the Colorado
civil rights referendum on sexual orientation known as Amendment 2 - No Protected Status Based on Homosexual, Lesbian, or
Bisexual Orientation, November 3, 1992. That amendment was declared unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court in
May, 1997. The collection also includes documents related to the Grand Rapids, Michigan, failed ballot initiative, 2000, that
would have prohibited the city from enacting, adopting, enforcing or administering any ordinance, regulation, rule, or policy
which grants special class status based upon sexual orientation, conduct, or relationship.
The collection also contains correspondence with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force; Ralph Bolton, anthropologist at
Pomona College, Clarement, California; Gregory M. Herek, psychologist at the University of California, Davis; David M. Rayside,
political scientist at the University of Toronto; Deb Amory, Society of Lesbian & Gay Anthropologists; C. Elton Hinshaw, American
Economic Association; Cate Terwilliger, Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph; Janet Lecompte, a research historian and writer;
and Boyd McDonald.
There are lists of colleges, universities, and national professional and scientific associations that issued official non-discrimination
statements regarding sexual orientation. There are writings by Kutsche, including his article "Minority Anthropologists and
Federal Law." There are also reference materials by Gerald Creed, William Simon & John H. Gagnon, Clark L. Taylor, Esther
Newton, and Gary W. McDonogh.
The collection contains course syllabi of gay and lesbian English literature courses from the New School, New York, New York,
and Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The collection also contains clippings, notes, flyers, agendas, and questionnaires.
