Biographical Note
Ralph Fertig (1939-2014), spokesperson for bicycle related issues in the City of Santa Barbara, was a founding member of the
Santa Barbara Bicycling Coalition and creator of the Coalition's newsletter
Quick Release. An advocate for bike lanes and hiking trails, Fertig was a founding member of Grassroots 101, and a member of ad hoc committees
advising the city in the adoption of Santa Barbara's Circulation Element.
Scope and Content
The collection contains documents, clippings, and newsletters collected by Ralph Fertig over the course of his work as a bicycling
advocate. Most of the documents have been arranged alphabetically and have been treated as subject files. These cover alternative
transport studies, bicycle counts, Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition papers, feasibility studies, city planning studies, and
transportation improvement plans for Santa Barbara County. Newspaper clippings relate to bicycle advocacy issues. Newsletters
include issues of
Bicycle Forum and the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition's
Quick Release.

The collection has been arranged into three series: Series 1. Subject files, Series 2. Newspaper clippings, Series 3. Newsletters.
