Scope and Content of Collection
The Andrew Wright Papers include a small selection of biographical materials, Wright's personal journals, as well as typescript
drafts of Wright's short stories, notes, and correspondence. The papers range in date from 1948 through 2009.
Arranged in three series: 1) BIOGRAPHICAL, 2) JOURNALS, 3) WRITINGS.
Biography
Andrew Wright attended Harvard College before being recruited to serve in the Office of Strategic Services during World War
II. He was stationed in England, where he met his wife, Gina, but returned to Harvard after the war to earn a bachelor's degree
in English. He went on to earn his master's and doctorate degrees from Ohio State University in 1948 and 1951, respectively.
He taught at Ohio State University for 11 years before joining UC San Diego in 1963 where he (along with Roy Harvey Pearce)
co-founded the Department of Literature and served as an early chairman of the Library Committee. Wright was awarded the Guggenheim
Fellowship and Fulbright Fellowship twice each, and was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature of the United Kingdom.
He served on editorial boards, and was a reviewer for
The Times Literary Supplement and other journals. He taught at UC San Diego for nearly 30 years before retiring in 1991. Notable works by Wright include
Jane Austen's Novels: A Study in Structure (1953),
Joyce Cary: A Preface to His Novels (1958),
Henry Fielding: Mask and Feast (1965),
Blake's Job: A Commentary (1972),
Anthony Trollope: Dream and Art (1983), and
Fictional Discourse and Historical Space; Defoe and Theroux, Austen and Forster, Conrad and Greene (1987). Wright passed away August 3, 2009.
