Description
The UCLA Vietnamese Student Union was established in 1977 as the Vietnamese Student Association with an emphasis on preservation
of Vietnamese culture and heritage. In 1978 the Refugee Aid Project, later the separate organization, Vietnamese Refugee Aid
Committee was established. These two groups were united in 1996 to form the Vietnamese Student Union. The collection includes
materials from all aspects of organization including the four pillars of the organization: cultural, educational, political
and community. Materials include documents, photographs, pamphlets, born digital records, programs, and ephemera.
Background
The UCLA Vietnamese Student Union was established in 1977 as the Vietnamese Student Association with an emphasis on preservation
of Vietnamese culture and heritage. In 1978 the Refugee Aid Project, later the separate organization, Vietnamese Refugee Aid
Committee was established. These two groups were united in 1996 to form the Vietnamese Student Union. The organization sponsors
a variety of events and initiatives to provide networks to promote educational, cultural and political awareness, as well
as social support among UCLA Vietnamese students including Vietnamese Culture Night, Cafe Am, the Black April Commemoration
the Higher Opportunity Program for Education (HOPE), the South East Asian Campus Learning Education and Retention project,
South East Asian Admitted Students Weekend, and the South East Asian Transfer Enrichment Day.
