The collection was donated to Golden Gate National Recreation Area's National Maritime Museum at San Francisco (GOGA-00789) in 1983 and transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in 1989 (SAFR-00001.)

Historical or Biographical Note

Captain Ottmar Fritz began his career in 1911 as a deck boy on the square-rigger Obotrita, bound for Cape Horn. He was 15 years old. His career spanned 55 years and ended as Military Sea Transportation Service port captain at Fort Mason, San Francisco. His autobiography, "Liverpool buttons & homeward bound stitches ; portrait of a master mariner", was published in 1993. Friz died in 2001 at the age of 105.

The Captain Ottmar Friz motion picture film of C.A. Thayer (built 1895; schooner, 3m) and Eppleton Hall (built 1914; paddlewheel tugboat) (P83-046, SAFR 00384) consists of 2 reels of 16 mm silent, color motion picture film of C.A. Thayer in San Francisco in 1958 and one of Eppleton Hall (built 1914; paddlewheel tugboat) includes footage of Eppleton Hall arriving through the Golden Gate Bridge and pierside with spectators in 1970.
All films were shot by Captain Ottmar Friz.
