Organizational History

Based in Berkeley, California, previous hit Earth Island next hit Institute is an international nonprofit conservation group established by noted environmentalist David R. Brower. The organization serves as an incubator supporting numerous ecological and social justice projects working to conserve, protect and restore the environment. previous hit Earth Island next hit Institute was founded in 1982, opened their first office in San Francisco in 1986, and has fostered hundreds of local and internationally focused environmental projects including Baikal Watch, Bay Area Wilderness Training, Borneo Project, the Brower Fund, International Marine Mammal Project, Restore Hetch Hetchy, Sacred Land Film Project, the Sea Turtle Restoration Project and Transportation Involves Everyone (T.I.E.). The roster of previous hit Earth Island next hit Institute projects changes from year to year as some projects are completed, added or otherwise evolve. Brower served as Chairman of the Board of Directors from its founding until his death in 2000. John Knox and David Phillips served in leadership roles as Co-Executive Directors over the time period that these records span. Phillips also serves as director of the International Marine Mammal Project, worked extensively to pass dolphin conservation legislation and helped to establish and lead the Free Willy Keiko Foundation, along with Mark Berman. Berman served as Director to International Marine Mammal Project's Dolphin-Safe Tuna Monitoring Program during much of the period these materials cover, campaigned against the practice of animal captivity in theme parks and was the force behind passing much of the early dolphin protection legislation and campaigns against dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Japan.
The International Marine Mammal Project is a Berkeley, California based program of the previous hit Earth Island next hit Institute founded in 1982. The International Marine Mammal Project directs a number of campaigns to halt the practice of dolphin and whale captures and killings and to free marine mammals held in captivity in aquariums, theme parks and other facilties around the world. In the late 1980s, the International Marine Mammal Project launched an immensely successful campaign to place pressure on the commercial tuna fishing industry to cease the practice of purse seine net (drift net) tuna fishing because of the extremely high instances of dolphin mortality associated with that type of fishing. The Free Willy Keiko Foundation, founded in 1994, is one of the largest and most well-known programs of the International Marine Mammal Project. It was established for the purpose of arranging the rehabilitation and release of Keiko, the orca "killer whale" used in the making of the "Free Willy" film produced by Warner Bros.

Scope and Contents

The Free Willy Keiko Foundation is a private, not for profit organization founded in 1994, originally funded by sponsorships from Warner Bros. and New Regency Productions, the Craig O. McCaw Foundation, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The foundation's mission is "To rescue, rehabilitate, and attempt to return captive and stranded cetaceans to their native habitats, through operation of a state-of-the-art deep-water rehabilitation facility. The Free Willy Keiko Foundation intends to attempt the first reintroduction of a captive orca whale, and to engage in scientific research and public education necessary to accomplish this goal and the Foundation's overall mission." Other organizations involved in supporting and funding Keiko's release were the Humane Society of the United States, Mattel Toys and United Parcel Service (UPS). The foundation was managed under the umbrella of the International Marine Mammal Project of the previous hit Earth Island next hit Institute of Berkeley, California and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society of United Kingdom. In March 1999, the Board of Directors of the Free Willy Keiko Foundation voted to change of the corporation to Ocean Futures Society, Inc. and elected Jean-Michel Cousteau as its new president. In 2001, Ocean Futures ceased to manage the project and the operation of monitoring and managing Keiko was returned to the Free Willy Keiko Foundation and the Humane Society of the United States. The collection is arranged all under the Free Willy Keiko Foundation name, even though the corporate name changed with "Ocean Futures" added while they were leading the project.
Keiko was captured in the North Atlantic off Iceland in 1979, sold to a Canadian theme park shortly thereafter and then sold to the Reino Adventuro theme park in Mexico City, Mexico. Keiko was "discovered" there and cast in the starring actor role in the Warner Bros./New Regency Productions 1993 film "Free Willy". Upon the film's release in theaters, Keiko gained thousands of fans, including many children, environmentalists and animal welfare activists who then sought to gain freedom from captivity for Keiko, as the fictional Willy had achieved in its Hollywood or storybook ending.
In 1995, Keiko was donated by the owners of Reino Adventura to the Free Willy Keiko Foundation. Rehabilitation and treatment began in Mexico and in January 1996 Keiko was transported by airplane to a new facility at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Oregon. On September 9, 1998, after previous hit Earth Island next hit Institute determined that Keiko had been sufficiently rehabiliated and relocation sites had been scouted and selected, he was flown by airplane to Vettsmannaeyjar, Iceland where he was released into sea pens off the coast on September 10, 1998. By summer of 2002, Keiko was released into Iceland's open waters. He then swam to Norway and inhabited waters off Norway until his death in December 2003.
