Acquisition Information

The bulk of the collection is from the collections of William R. Moran, Edouard Pecourt, Benno Häupl, Allen G. Debus, Peter Martland, Verne Todd, and Harry and Grace James, as well as gifts and acquisitions.

Processing Information

The catalogs are arranged alphabetically by record company, and chronologically for each company. The country of issue for catalogs for overseas branches of a company are noted in parentheses after the catalog title. For example, Italian Gramophone Co. catalogs for the Italian market are under Gramophone Co. as "[Italy] La Voce del Padrone: Catalogo Dischi 1948." Page numbers have been added for later additions and will eventually be added for all catalogs. In cases where catalogs are for more than one label or where a label is a subsidiary of another, the catalog is listed under the first label represented or under the parent company. Cross references are provided where multiple labels are represented or where there may be confusion.

Scope and Content

The Sound recording trade catalog collection consists of over 5,000 manufacturer, distributor, and dealer catalogs of commercial sound recordings from 1898 through the 1980s (bulk, 1900-1955). It contains annual catalogs, monthly supplements, numerical catalogs and other trade literature for companies around the world including Victor/RCA, Columbia, Brunswick, Edison, Decca, Gramophone Co, Pathé, Odeon, and others. The catalogs from the 78rpm era are the bulk of the collection and there are many significant and rare catalogs including many numerical catalogs, foreign language catalogs and supplements, and catalogs from European companies.
