Biography / Administrative History
This society, the membership of which was chiefly female, flourished on
the periphery of the College of the Pacific, the American Association of
University Women, and the various local historical societies for about 25
years. Many of its members lived in cities other than Stockton, some as far
away as the sierra foothills. Some published regularly in local and regional
newspapers. A few, such as Lirrell Starling, placed their work with national
magazines. Theodosia Benjamin, lifelong San Joaquin resident and descendent of
one of the region's first settlers, was probably the society’s chief organizer
and financial backer.
Scope and Content of Collection
Papers consist of poems by members of the Stockton Poetry Society. The
subject matter of many of these is local scenery and local history. There is
also a sizable body of material relating to the events of World War II.
