Organizational History

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) AIDS Health Project (AHP) began its HIV/AIDS education, prevention, and counseling efforts in 1984 with support from the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) and other agencies. It grew out of a community commitment to respond and treat itself. AHP staff and volunteers conducted research and provided mental health counseling, crisis intervention, HIV testing, youth outreach, and clinical and social services. Additionally, AHP provided HIV/AIDS training to mental health and other healthcare providers. Many AHP staff and volunteers participated in national conferences and other educational and awareness-raising events. AHP implemented innovative programs and developed literature aimed at youth, gay men, minority communities, drug users, and other populations. AHP changed its name from the AIDS Health Project to the Alliance Health Project in Spring 2013, expanding its mission to explicitly include the health and wellness of LGBTQ people.

Scope and Contents

The records of the UCSF AIDS Health Project include administrative and funding materials, including meeting minutes, grants and contracts, and working files including program and research study records, engagement with various committees and organizations, and event and conference materials. The records also include publications and ephemera, including reports and manuals, flyers and brochures, posters, realia, newsletters, and clippings, and audiovisual material, including video and audio recordings and film. A very small amount of computer media is included in the collection, comprised of floppy disks noted at the folder level. The collection predominantly relates to HIV/AIDS and mental health, testing, counseling, social services, clinical care, fundraising, education and outreach, substance abuse, and gay health.

Arrangement

The collection has been subdivided into four series: I. Administrative and funding records, 1983-1999; II. Working files, 1982-2002; III. Publications and ephemera, 1980-2003; IV. Audiovisual material, 1983-2008.
