Abstract: The Asian Pacific Student Association at UC Irvine was founded in 1988. It began in March 1981 as the Asian/Pacific Student and Staff Association at UC Irvine as a social support network, promoting cultural sensitivity and awareness through education at UCI. This collection contains constitutions, photographs, event posters about Asian Pacific American Awareness Conference, talent show and film screening posters, organization files, and documents from the Retention through Impact, Solidarity, and Empowerment (RISE) program. Additional material includes one proclamation from Orange County for Asian-Pacific Heritage Month awarded to the Association in 1999, material related to Asian Heritage Week, Asian Pacific Awareness Conference, Asian Pacific Heritage Month, high school outreach, Senior Recognition Banquet, Winter Retreat, announcements, clippings, newsletters, ephemera, minutes and notes, resources, and photographs.

Acquisition Information

Transferred from the Asian Pacific Student Association, 2016 and 2018. In 2019, material was separated from the Cross Cultural Center records and accessions from 2016-2017. In 2020, additional material separated from the UCI Clubs and Organizations publications series (PS-033) and collected from the 2012 Anteater Involvement Fair was added to the collection.

Historical Background

The Asian Pacific Student Association (APSA) is a progressive network of constituent organizations that empower the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community at the University of California, Irvine. Through a commitment to education, advocacy, community outreach and active political participation, APSA promotes diversity throughout the community at large. In pursuing these goals, APSA strives towards the establishment of equality in a multicultural society.

In March of 1981, Terry Hayamizu formed the Asian/Pacific Student and Staff Association at the University of California, Irvine in response to several suicide attempts made by Asian American students who felt trapped between two cultures. This organization functioned as a social support network, which sought to promote cultural sensitivity and awareness through educating UCI staff and students. As the needs of the students changed, so did the focus of the organization. Consequently, the Asian Pacific Student Association was formed in 1988 to better address the specific needs of students. Since then, APSA has grown as an organization. In addition to its role as a social support network, APSA has established itself as a political entity challenging the issues that affect Asian and Pacific Islander students.
