    Biographical Information

The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council is a non-profit organization whose mission is to create a continuous trail along the ridgelines overlooking the San Francisco Bay. Inspired by the ideas of former National Park Service Director William Penn Mott, Jr., the council was founded in 1987 by representatives of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the Greenbelt Alliance as the "Bay Area Ridge Trail Project". The first trail section was dedicated in 1989, and the council became an independent organization with non-profit status in 1992. The council celebrated the opening of the three-hundredth mile of the Ridge Trail in 2006, with plans for the trail to surpass 550 continuous miles when completed. The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council continues to work towards its mission, currently holding offices in the San Francisco Presidio just over a mile from a section of the Ridge Trail.

    Scope and Content of Collection

The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council Records consist of files that the organization compiled during approximately the first decade of its existence. The bulk of the collection is comprised of trail planning files, documenting the mapping and construction of trail segments and Ridge Trail gap strategies; also prominent in the collection are materials related to special events hosted by the council, management of trail sections, and council administrative records. The collection encompasses a range of materials-including maps, correspondence, and reports-most notably documenting: the San Francisco Bay, along with the ridgelines of the nine Bay Area counties surrounding it; California trails, parks, and open spaces; and environmental restoration and preservation.
The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council Records are subdivided into four series:
    • Series I: Trail Planning
    • Series II: Trail Management
    • Series III: Special Events
    • Series IV: Administrative Files
