Historical note
The Friends of the UCLA Library was founded in 1951 to fund collection purchases and sponsor public programs celebrating the
UCLA library's resources and services. The first President was Mr. W.W. Robinson. Collection development emphasis was on manuscripts,
local historical records, family papers, and rare and expensive books. The organization served as a link between the campus
and the public community of booklovers.
During its fifty some year history, the Friends of the UCLA Library planned and sponsored many events, and added greatly to
the UCLA Libraries collection. Among its accomplishments were the donation of Godart's "Book of Hours" (published in Paris
ca.1521), the Elmer Belt Vinciana Library, and the early atlases and travel books of Warren C. Sharman. Additionally, the
Friends organized the Student Book Collection Competition and lectures including "The Genius of the Commonplace – a Chat on
Samuel Pepys" (April 29, 1964) and "Spain and the Columbus Trail" (October 14, 1964).
The Friends of the UCLA Library continued in existence until December 8, 2003 when it was dissolved under direction of James
Bower, Library President, and its files were transferred to the UCLA library. Its former functions are now fulfilled by the
Library Development Office and UCLA Library Associates.
