    Biography / Administrative History

    Vera Hawkins grew up in Pomona, California where she graduated from Pomona High School before entering Pomona College in September 1905. A graduate with the Class of 1909, Vera excelled at public speaking and was involved in drama and the performing arts as a student. Georgia Hawkins, like her older sister, also graduated from Pomona High School before attending Pomona College. A graduate with the Class of 1912, Georgia served as president of the YWCA from 1911 to 1912 and was a member of the Pomona College Literary Society. Vera and Georgia's younger brother Joseph Hawkins also attended Pomona College for a period. Vera's daughter, JoAnn (Hawkins) Hayward graduated from Pomona College in 1942.

    Scope and Contents of the Collection

    The Hawkins Family Collection of Pomoniana includes materials belonging to Vera Hawkins ('09), Georgia Hawkins ('12), Joseph Hawkins (x'19), and JoAnn Hawkins Hayward ('42) from 1905 to 1942. The majority of the materials relate to Pomona College and student life, including event brochures and programs, student publications, commencement materials, correspondence, receipts, membership cards, and photographs. Pomona College memorabilia and jewelry items are also featured, including a class patch, pin, luggage tag, bracelet, watchband, and key chain. A scrapbook belonging to JoAnn Hawkins compiles photographs, event programs, playbills, and college ephemera for the years 1937 to 1941. In addition to Pomona College materials, the Hawkins Family Collection also features materials related to Vera, Georgia, and Joseph's high school careers at Pomona High School and the Belmont School for Boys (Belmont, CA), respectively. Items include commencement materials, report cards, event programs, diplomas, yearbooks, and student publications.
