    Biography/History

Martin Breslauer started his antiquarian bookselling trade in 1898 in Berlin, where it flourished for almost 4 decades before he had to sell 2/3 of the company's unparalleled reference collection in order to help his family escape Nazi Germany. He died of a heart attack in 1940, in London, where his family had relocated. His son Bernard, still in his early 20s, took over the business, learning as he went along and succeeding immensely. The company flourished and retained its prestige as preeminent antiquarian booksellers. By 1977, Bernard Breslauer moved the business to New York, continuing his trade there. He died in 2004.
