Description
Video recordings and oral history transcripts from a program entitled "Oceanography: The Making of a Science, People, Institutions
and Discovery." The program was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in cooperation with the H. John Heinz III
Center for Science, Economics and the Environment to celebrate the history of the ONR and oceanography.
Background
Fred E. Saalfeld, Executive Director of the Office of Naval Research, decided to celebrate the history of ONR and oceanography
by sponsoring a series of five regional colloquia held at American oceanographic facilities and a national colloquium held
in Washington, D.C. in 2000. The series was planned by the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment,
which videotaped all of the sessions. Speakers were selected by institutions fostering oceanographic research. The Heinz Center
contracted with local historians of science to do videotaped interviews with prominent ocean scientists at the regional meetings.
