    Biography/Administrative History

    Mr. Jonathan Klein wrote the specifications for the 1990s procurement of Gallery cars and locomotives from Nippon Sharyo and the draft for the Gallery cars overhaul for CalTrains / SP San Francisco Subdivision. The California Department of Transportation is an executive department within the state of California. In 1980, Caltrans began to subsidize Southern Pacific operations. The Penninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board began operating in 1987 and in 1991 bought the right of way between San Francisco and San Jose. In 1992, the Penninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board took responsibility for Caltran operations and selected Amtrak as the contract operator. In July 1997, the official name became CalTrain.
