Biography
Errol Flynn (1909-1959) was an Australian-born actor active in film from 1933 to 1959. Known for his
swashbuckler roles, Flynn starred in a number of adventure films for Warner Bros., including THE
ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938). Trudy McVicker, a fan of Flynn's and collector of Flynn memorabilia,
began researching the actor in 1980 in an effort to refute allegations that he was a Nazi spy during
World War II. McVicker? interest in Flynn dates back to the late 1940s when she was a teenager; she was
a resident of Illinois.
Collection Scope and Content Summary
The Errol Flynn collection compiled by Trudy McVicker spans the years 1929-1985 and encompasses 1.3
linear feet. The production files contain clippings and reviews for such films as the Australian-produced
IN THE WAKE OF THE BOUNTY (1933), one of Flynn's earliest films, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938), and
THE PRVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX (1939). The subject files consist primarily of correspondence,
clippings, and articles. Much of McVicker? research investigates the veracity of author Charles Higham?
allegations that Flynn was a Nazi sympathizer involved in espionage during World War II. Of note are
photocopies of Flynn? birth certificate, an unclassified FBI document regarding his association with
suspected Nazi agent Dr. Hermann Frederick Erben, and his naturalization papers from the Department of
State, Immigration and Naturalization Service.
Arrangement
Arranged in the following series: 1. Production files; 2. Subject files.
