Personal and Work Notes January 24, 1998-September 13, 1998

Scope and Contents

Note from JFS:
"In January of 1997, with my friend Jesse Brown -- he'd been my best man at my wedding -- I began trenching and forming up foundations of a new building outside my home in order to move my writing office out of our second bedroom for the growing family. Susan was carrying Emma. I had designed and gotten city/county approval for a combination barn/garage, office, and upstairs guest loft in 1996. It was snowing when I started. I worked 7 days a week on it for the rest of that year, and just before Emma's birth that June Jesse left the job after a series of difficulties. Emma was born, I took a couple weeks of paternity leave, which I spent working on the building, then worked overtime for State Parks while working long hours on the building on my days off and editing "A Natural Death" for publication in Orion, for the remainder of that year.
In October I was contacted by an editor at Lyons Press; in January by Antonia Fusco, editor for Algonquin—who'd read the essay in Orion. I began work with Sandy Dijkstra on a book proposal. I was working with a welder on my major redesign of State Parks' patrol boat for Lake Clementine and hiring and training 3 or 4 seasonals. Pantheon editor Dan Frank called me at home on June 2, the third of four publishers who would recruit me to write Nature Noir. On June 14 suffered the tick bite that infected me with Lyme and babesiosis. I worked overtime at State Parks and spent the rest of the year finishing the new building."

Working Notes: Number 1 - Bears October 26, 1998-March 31, 1999

Scope and Contents

Note from JFS:
"In late 1998, following a suggestion from Barry Lopez about the way he did it, I separated my working notes for books and magazines from my personal journals. From then on I generally had two notebooks going at the same time.
In "Working Notes #1 I was doing research on the struggles and mayhem with black bears at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. I had visited there and interviewed David Graber, Harold Werner, and wildlife technician Mike Coffey that September. At that point I was still thinking of my first book as I had referred to it in the contributor's column of Orion magazine, a collection of diverse essays about rangering in the various places I had done it. So I thought the bear material was part of that book. It turned out that it was a whole separate book, which became Engineering Eden."
Box 1, Folder 9

Working Notes: Number 2 April 8, 1999-January 25, 2000

Scope and Contents

Note from JFS:
"The note I flagged in Working Notes #2 has it that I sent out the proposal for the first book by Fedex to my agent Sandy Dijkstra on Thursday April 22, 1999. I remember all three publishers wanted it, and the general sense was, whether from them through Sandy or later from Deanne Urmy -- and in her case I remember she was quite sure of it, that the book should be set in one place and have a single narrative arc. I had been working in the essay form for my entire career, and my heroes such as Wendell Berry, Scott Sanders, and Snyder wrote these stand-alone essays I admired so much, so I had not made that leap yet. And some writers never do."

Box 1, Folder 12

Working Notes: Number 4 - Notes from Work with Scott Sanders and Subsequent Book Deal November 24, 2000-August 2, 2001

Scope and Contents

Note from JFS:
"This folder contains papers having to do with my attempts to find a literary agent beginning in 1996, with three unsolicited inquiries from publishers after publication of "A Natural Death," and my halting work with my new agent, Sandy Dijkstra, on a book proposal, as central nervous system manifestations set in after I contracted Lyme disease and babesiosis from a tick bite at work in June of 1998.
The Care of Rivers was an early title of the proposed book of diverse essays on various places I had worked as a ranger, before I settled on a book-length narrative about one place, the American River. As I struggled with the disease's effects -- memory loss, loss of context, and "brain fog" -- the proposal process with my agent ground to a halt. In all of 1999 I can remember completing only three short radio commentaries for KQED's syndicated radio program "The California Report" and one magazine piece for Land and People, all about the Straus Dairy and the Marin Agricultural Land Trust (there's a folder on this work and a CD of my commentaries in the document file "Straus Dairy"). In 2001, having gone on disability and prescribed daily infusions of intravenous antibiotics, I tried to work on the book again, submitting chapters to two writing workshops: my second Environmental Writing Institute, this time with Scott Russell Sanders, and with Michael Carlisle at Squaw. The material in box 6 [as originally packed for donation] on Barbara Schoener and "A Natural Death" is related to and contemporaneous with this folder.
Box 1, Folder 13

Working Notes: Number 5 August 6, 2001-April 1, 2002

Scope and Contents

Note from JFS:
"In this notebook covering 8/6/2001 to 4/1/ 2002 I am still infusing antibiotics every day (until the autumn of 2001) through the port (Groshong central catheter) installed in my chest. I take my suitcase of IV bags, equipment, and drugs and attend the nonfiction workshop taught by literary agent Michael Carlisle at the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley, run by my friends the Hall/Jones family (Oakley, Barbara, Louis B. Jones, Brett Hall Jones, Sands Hall, Tracy Hall). Also a seminar taught by screenwriter Gil Dennis "Finding the Story."
Michael Carlisle and I become friends. My book deal with Deanne Urmy at Hougton Mifflin gets inked. Sandy Dijkstra gets me a 50k advance for it. The deal is made while I am at Squaw Valley.
I continue work on what becomes Nature Noir. I am taking a semester-long course on weather and climate at the Grass Valley campus of Sierra College to write the storm of 1986 scenes in "It Never Rains in California.""

Working Notes: Number 6 April 6, 2002-June 6, 2003

Box 1, Folder 15

Working Notes: Number 7 June 7, 2003-September 24, 2005

Scope and Contents

Note from JFS:
"In this notebook covering 6/7/2003 to 9/24/2005 I am feeling a little better at times, now under the care of Joe Burrascano in NY and Raphael Stricker in SF. I continue work on what becomes Nature Noir, still working on weather/flooding.
Barry Lopez, whom I know a little through Orion magazine's various events since meeting him in the early 90s on one of their Forgotten Language Tours, has connected with the Sowell Family Collection at Texas Tech, and through them organizes a meeting for promising writers on a camp in Junction, TX, all expenses paid. It's led by Lopez, Bill McKibben, and war correspondent Alan Weisman ( The World Without Us). I am chosen to participate, along with my friend, naturalist David Lucas, Kurt Caswell, and others. I make the mistake of going running through the brushy hills and beavertail cactus with Bill McKibben, who is all legs and lungs, an endurance athlete. This is in October of 2004, just before the February 2005 publication of NN [ Nature Noir]. Lopez writes a beautiful blurb for the book."

Working Notes: Wilderness & etc. July 11, 2011-May 7, 2012

Scope and Contents

Note from JFS:
"I learned or taught myself a rigorous way of narrative nonfiction, collecting all the composite details it would take to render a scene I had not witnessed with the most painstaking accuracy. Here in the section marked "Federal Court LA Depositions" I wanted to render the courtroom for the opening passage in Engineering Eden, Chapter 1. I went to the building manager and asked him to take me to the late Judge Hauk's courtroom, which he said had not been remodeled. He would allow no photographs for security reasons, so I stood sketching the room and mapping the furniture as he stood waiting.
I then ran the sketches past older lawyers and judges who had practiced there, including Dennis Martin, to see if anything had changed in the room since 1975.
I did the same kind of thing at the Walker Farm, later in the same notebook. During my first visit with Kara DeVries in January 2012, working from family photos of the farm from the sixties and seventies, I had Jenny Walker, an artist, sketch a map of the farm outbuildings and other features as they had been in Harry's time. Then, over the following years, I frequently asked her and her sisters for details."
