    Biography/Administrative History

Gertrude M. Warren grew up in San Francisco and married William R. Jackman in 1907. They had one daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1908. Gertrude sold Liberty bonds on the corner of Powell and Market streets during World War I. She divorced Jackman in 1918, and in 1926 married James Hall Bishop. For two years before the United States declared war on Japan she was executive secretary with British War Relief here. The booth where she sold defense saving stamps opened February 13, 1942, and after that Bishop was often assisted there by her daughter. Mrs. Bishop typically raised $1000 in stamps on any given day; between Feb. 1942 and Nov. 1945, she had sold $406,000 in war bonds. Besides her work selling war savings stamps, she was a member of the Red Cross staff assistance corps. She died in San Francisco in 1960.
