    Biographical Note

    John Collet was a British consul in Genoa. He succeeded James Hollford in December 1776.

    This collection contains 209 pieces housed in 3 boxes. It covers letters from John Collet and Joseph Brame, his vice-consul, to William Dean Poyntsz, British charge d’affaires in Turin, Italy. It touches upon European commercial and military news, including the actions of American privateers in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, and news of the American Revolution.

    Cataloger's note:
    John Collet, active 1776-1779, a British consul in Italy is identified as “Collet, John (b)” on the folders in this collection and within the Huntington manuscripts catalog to distinguish him from “Collet, John (a)”, active 1765, a British scholar of ancient Hebrew.
    This collection was originally in the form of a bound volume. On the spine of the binding was stamped "Genoa correspondence 1776 to 1771", suggesting that the volume was one in a series.
