Biographical / Historical

The Peninsula Chimes, later Westview Chimes was the official church paper of the Presbyterian Churches of the Monterey area, including the cities of Watsonville, Salinas, and Monterey, though its scope quickly contracted to focus on the Watsonville Church community.
First established as a Methodist Mission in 1898, the church currently known as Westview Presbyterian fell under the purview of the Presbyterians in 1901 due to an agreement between the superintendents of the Japanese Methodist and Presbyterian Churches. It changed its status to a Church in 1909 and became the Japanese Presbyterian Church.
The current building was constructed in 1930. Most of the Japanese-American residents of Watsonville were incarcerated at Poston Relocation Center in Arizona, which closed November, 1945. The Church then served as a hostel home for returnees before resuming normal functions. Reverend Howard Toriumi was the pastor in the beginning of this postwar period, before departing for San Francisco in 1949.
In 2013, the Church earned a Historic Landmark Award from the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History
