Biographical / Historical
Lawrence D. Longo (1926-2016) was born in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from
Pacific Union College and then the College of Medical Evangelists (now Loma Linda University
School of Medicine) in 1954. Dr. Longo established the Center for Perinatal Biology at Loma
Linda University and served as its founding director from 1973-2012; he was president of
both the Society for Gynecologic Investigation (1982-1983) and the American Osler Society
(2002-2003).
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of invoices and subject files related to Lawrence D. Longo's
collection of antiquarian and rare books in reproductive biology and dates from 1878-2014.
One of Longo's first book purchases was in 1962 and his last purchase appears to have
been in 2014. Accompanying the invoices is correspondence between Longo and the book dealers
regarding his purchases and reimbursement forms submitted to Loma Linda University by Longo.
Subject files relate to various physicians, institutions, and topics in the health sciences
and include clippings, lists, photocopies, printed portraits, obituaries, and offprints. The
earliest clipping is from June 29, 1878 from The British Medical Journal about the Harveian
Oration. Most of the printed material relates to the Canadian physician William Osler and
the writings of medical historian William Bennett Bean.
