[Identification of Item], Julian F. Knox Collection, Environmental Design
Archives, University of California, Berkeley.
Julian Floyd Knox was born in Ponca, Oklahoma in 1930. He moved to Stockton,
California where he attended Stockton High School and the College of the
Pacific, earning an AA in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War
and upon his return enrolled at U.C. Berkeley. He graduated in 1957 with a BA in
Architecture.
Knox worked as a draftsman for a number of architects and
engineers from 1956-1962, including Clayton Kantz, Delp Johnson, John. A. Blume,
John Bolles, Loubet & Glynn, August Waegmann, and Marquis & Stoller. In
1962, he became a partner at Kosevitz & Knox where he stayed until 1967. He
was admitted to the AIA Northern California chapter in 1964.
Later he
returned to work at Marquis & Stoller for several years, eventually opening
a solo practice where he worked until his death in 2005.

The Julian F. Knox Collection is organized into two series: Personal Papers
and Project Records. The collection arrived with no evident order, so within
each series an order has been imposed by the archivist.
The Personal Papers series is brief and includes reproductions of student
drawings from classes at U.C. Berkeley, a photographic portrait of Knox, a
postcard from photographer Joshua Freiwald, a personal sketchbook, and a
selection of Knox’s line drawings, silkscreen prints, and watercolors.
The
Project Records contain architectural drawings, primarily from Knox’s time as a
solo practitioner with a small number of projects done in collaboration with
architect Janis Sulzinger. The majority of the projects represented in the
collection are residential, many of which relate to client Paul Vincent and his
development companies.
