1930s-2010
Scope and Contents
This series contains samples and photographs of Miriam's artwork, articles about
Miriam, Miriam's writings, her teaching materials and research files, and documents from
her professional activities and community involvement. Included are a variety of
examples of her exploration with mushrooms such as paper samples, dyed yarn, and dye
light fastness tests, as well as her work with batik, printmaking, and sculpture. Miriam
kept research files on a variety of topics including mushrooms, papermaking, dyeing, and
textiles, which are included in this series. The writings in this series span her
experimentation with mushrooms and exemplify her meticulous note taking processes, and
include early planning notes, manuscripts, and correspondence surrounding her three
published books on mushrooms:
Let's Try Mushrooms for Color (1974),
Mushrooms for Color (1980), and
Mushrooms for Dyes, Paper,
Pigments & Myco-Stix
(2007). Miriam's teaching and professional activities
are represented in materials from exhibitions and fairs in which she was involved; the
International Mushroom Dye Institute (IMDI) meeting minutes, board information, and
promotional materials; and photographs and notes from her workshops on various
topics.

Teaching and Professional Activities
Biographical / Historical
Miriam was particularly involved in two initiatives during her professional career:
the International Mushroom Dye Institute (IMDI) and the International Fungi and Fibre
Federation (IFFF). The IMDI was founded in 1985, directly after the publication of the
book
Skapa av svampfärgat garn. The authors, Carla Sundström, Erik
Sundström, and Miriam Rice, chose to invest a percentage of the book royalties in the
creation of a non-profit organization, primarily for educational purposes. The mission
of the IMDI is “to encourage the use of Fungal Pigments; to further research on their
extraction and employment; to encourage research and cultivation of dye fungi; [and]
to financially assist artists and researchers to participate in international symposia
and exhibitions.” The IFFF was established in 1999 at the International Fungi &
Fibre Symposium in Hønefoss, Norway. This group was formed to help guide the planning
of future International Fungus & Fibre Symposia (IFFS) every 2 or 3 years.
Scope and Contents
This component includes materials on Miriam's professional involvement in exhibits,
readings, conferences and expositions, and workshops and other teaching events, mostly
relating to mushrooms, dyeing, and textiles. Miriam's work in the International
Mushroom Dye Institute and the International Fungi and Fibre Symposium are documented,
as well as her exhibitions and teaching in Mendocino, California and beyond.

Raymond Rice papers
1934-2001
Scope and Contents
This series contains Ray's artwork in various media across his career, including his
film work from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s. A color and black and white manual
on the art of luminography highlights his practice and developments with his film
technique. Sketches and materials from his films
Woman and
Goodbye show two examples of how Ray was experimenting in the 1970s.
There are some hand-painted film acetates that he used for the background of his
stop-motion animation films. Also included in this series are photographs of Ray's
commissioned mural work he completed in the 1950s-1970s for several schools. These are
space-oriented works titled "dwarfs" and "supernovas." Other works include his mosaics
commissioned from The Ford Motor Company and The Fresno Airport, which he completed
around the same period and are documented in photographic slides. Ray's written work
includes contributions to various newspapers and journals, poetry (often under
pseudonyms), personal journal entries, and artists' books, including
The Wages of
Age
(1996) which combined his work in sketch art and poetry. This series also
includes Ray's sketches, both on loose paper and in sketchbooks, mainly from the
1980s-1990s.
Film
Scope and Contents
This component mainly includes materials that Ray used in the process of creating his
films, such as sketches, photographs, and animation cels, as well as some original
film reels More of Ray's film work can be seen in MS180 Ray Rice Films, which contains
digitized versions of the films.

Correspondence
1940s-2000s
Scope and Contents
This series contains both Ray's and Miriam's individual correspondence as well as their
shared letters. Miriam's correspondence forms the largest component of the three in this
series. Her letters include collaborations, fan mail, and especially materials from her
published books, including
Mushrooms for Dyes and Paper, Pigments &
Myco-Stix
. There are also many materials from her work with the International
Mushroom Dye Institute, International Fungi and Fibre Symposium, and Mendocino Arts
Center. Ray's correspondence is the smallest portion of the series, and includes letters
dating from the 1940s through the late 1990s. There are documents detailing his work
with the American poet William Pitt Root, among others which show Ray's interest in this
medium. Further, some of Ray's letters include communications with his patrons regarding
commissioned works. Ray's and Miriam's combined correspondence provides a glimpse into
their relationships with friends and family, and includes holiday cards and personal
letters to Ray and Miriam from their children.
Arrangement
Correspondence in each component of this series is arranged first by named
correspondents and topics, then in dated folders of unsorted correspondence.
