Biographical Information
Aldo Starker Leopold (1913-1983) was a wildlife biologist who made substantial contributions in the fields of ornithology,
wildlife management and conservation, and public policy. The eldest son of noted ecologist Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) and Estella
Bergere Leopold, he followed in his father's footsteps with his concern for wildlife management and environmental conservation.
A.S. Leopold grew up in Wisconsin and received his B.S. from the University of Wisconsin in 1936. Leopold worked as a junior
biologist with the United States Soil Erosion Service (1934-1935) and as a field biologist for the Missouri Conservation Commission
(1939-1944). He did graduate work in Forestry at Yale University and completed a Ph.D. in Zoology at the University of California,
Berkeley in 1944. Leopold's doctoral thesis was entitled
The Nature of Heritable Wildness in Turkeys. From 1944 to 1946, Leopold worked as Director of Field Research for the Conservation Section of the Pan American Union. This
would spark an interest in Mexico that would lead to the 1959 publication of one of Leopold's most notable works,
Wildlife in Mexico: The Game Birds and Mammals.
Leopold returned to Berkeley in 1946 as Assistant Professor of Zoology. He would continue as Professor of Zoology and Forestry
at UC Berkeley until his retirement in 1978. Leopold also served as Associate Director and Director of the Museum of Vertebrate
Zoology on the University of California, Berkeley campus and Director of the Sagehen Creek Field Station (1965-1979). His
scientific writings contributed greatly to knowledge of avian biology, and particularly of game birds. Leopold was an active
member of many conservation societies, including the Nature Conservancy, the Sierra Club, The Wilderness Society, the National
Wildlife Federation, and the California Academy of Sciences. Public service included serving as consultant to the California
Water Quality Control Board, the Missouri Conservation Department, and the Tanzania National Parks. Leopold was also an appointee
to the United States Marine Mammal Commission. During the 1960s and 1970s, Leopold chaired commissions charged with making
recommendations to the United States Secretary of the Interior about predator and rodent control, management of the national
wildlife refuge system, and national park wildlife, in general. Professional awards included election to the National Academy
of Sciences, the Department of Interior Conservation Award, the Aldo Leopold Medal of The Wildlife Society, the Audubon Society
Medal, the Browning Medal of the Smithsonian Institution, the Fellows Medal of the California Academy of Sciences, and a Distinguished
Service Award from the American Institute of Biological Sciences. A.S. Leopold was also an avid hunter and fisherman whose
hunting and fishing expeditions spanned the globe.
Scope and Content of Collection
Collection consists of correspondence; writings; a subject file of A.S. Leopold's professional activities; University of California,
Berkeley files; personal and family material; some photographs; and a small number of audio recordings. The correspondence
dates from 1960 to 1983 and is arranged (loosely) alphabetically by correspondent. Writings include manuscripts, reprints,
and and other materials, such as correspondence relating to Leopold's writings. There are also a small number of writings
by others. The subject file of professional activities consists of an alphabetically arranged series of files relating to
Leopold's work on various projects, commissions, and topics over the course of his career. Among the personal and family materials
are some files on A.S. Leopold's father, Aldo Leopold, especially relating to Aldo's estate and legacy. There are also other
family estate files. Notable among the personal materials are A.S. Leopold's journals documenting his passions for hunting,
fishing and wildlife. These journals date from the mid-1920s to the mid-1940s. Photographs in the collection are of limited
quantity and consist of prints and negatives documenting Leopold's work in Mexico, his work on wild turkeys in Missouri, and
other topics.
