Abstract: This small collection contains Dr. Arthur S. Kling's basic biographical and professional information in a few textual documents.
However, a visual history of his scientific work is well represented in photographs and over one thousand 35 mm slides. Contained
are presentations of experimental data, materials for teaching and lectures, and many pictures of non-human primates, who
were his main experimental subjects. There are also many slides from Dr. Kling's extensive travels in Africa and Europe, unfortunately
not identified for place.

Biography
Arthur (Art) S. Kling, M.D., was born in Chicago, IL, received a B.S. from Brookfield Zoo in Biology, and the M.D. degree
from the University of Utrecht, Holland. He interned and did his residency at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago. After positions
at Michael Reese and the University of Illinois, Chicago, he moved to Rutgers Medical School, New Brunswick, NJ, in 1968 and
remained there for twelve years.
In 1980 Dr. Kling became Chief, Psychiatry Services, at the Veterans Service Administration Medical Center, Sepulveda, CA,
served as Chief of Staff there from 1984 to 1986, and subsequently as Chief of Psychiatry Service until his death in 1997.
He was also appointed Professor in Residence in the Department of Psychiatry, UCLA School of Medicine, and served as the Department's
Vice Chairman in 1980 and Assistant Dean of the School of Medicine, 1984-1986. Dr. Kling was also a member of the UCLA Brain
Research Institute.
In addition to his ongoing teaching and administrative duties, Dr. Kling always maintained an active research program, focused
on the interaction of brain activity and social behavior. His subjects were mainly nonhuman primates, and much of the work
was performed in the field in Africa and other locations. He was lauded for contributions to the fields of psychiatry, neuroscience,
and primatology.
