Abstract: This collection primarily consists of
various materials related to Apple Computer, Inc.'s sales history, including documents on
establishing Apple dealers, selling strategies, reports on sales conference proceedings,
correspondence with Apple dealers, and annual reports. Also included are Apple company
bulletins, clippings, and memorabilia.
Conditions Governing Access
Open for research. Note that material must be requested at least 36 hours in advance of
intended use. Box 8, which contains original computer media, is restricted. Born-digital
material is not available in original format, and must be reformatted to a digital use
copy.

Arrangement
As there was no discernable original order, the collection was arranged into the following
categories based on format/type: Apple Sales, Technical Manuals and Demos, Apple Bulletins,
and Clippings and Memorabilia.
Biographical / Historical
Gene P. Carter was born in South Dakota in 1938. He studied electronics at Milwaukee School
of Engineering and moved to California in the 1960s to take a job in marketing with
Fairchild Semiconductor. He worked in marketing for National Semiconductor and eventually
went on to work for Apple Computer in 1976 as Vice President of Sales when the company was
still a small startup. While at Apple, he oversaw sales for their range of personal
computers including Apple II, Apple III, and Apple Lisa, and had a part in the creation of
the concept of the Apple Store. He left the company in 1984.

Scope and Contents
The bulk of this collection consists of materials related to Apple Computer's sales history
during the late 1970s-1980s, with an emphasis on sales records for the Apple II. Included
are documents on establishing Apple dealer distribution channels, dealer guidelines and
qualifications, dealer communications, sales information for various Apple products, sales
department memoranda and correspondence, Apple product demos, sales conference proceedings,
and annual sales reports. Also included in this collection are Apple company bulletins,
various newspaper and magazine clippings realted to Apple, and a large felt Apple
banner.

While Special Collections is the owner of the physical and digital items, permission to
examine collection materials is not an authorization to publish. These materials are made
available for use in research, teaching, and private study. Any transmission or reproduction
