Scope and Contents
Four decades of gay and lesbian memorabilia mostly from the San Francisco Bay Area, including handbills and fliers, programs,
membership cards, buttons, matchbooks, and other printed material.
This material was chosen in 1995 by curator Katharine Martinez from the Historical Society's collections (now known as the
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Historical Society), and it probably duplicates their holdings. Items were originally
saved by a number of anonymous individuals whose interests ranged from leather to drag. Majority of items are handbills in
a variety of sizes advertising events, including publicity for cabaret, theater, music, DJs and dances, comedians, sex parties,
art exhibitions, films, fundraisers, and balls, as well as political marches and demonstrations. There are also advertising
fliers, bar matchbooks, buttons and business cards.
There are also 1960s publications by SIR and the Council on Religion & The Homosexual, and one brochure from the Mattachine
Society.
