Background
A painter, printmaker and art educator, Matt Phillips was born in New York City in 1927[?]. He earned his MA at the University
of Chicago and then traveled extensively in Europe to study painting in the museums and studios. He returned to the United
States to accept a faculty position at Bard College in upstate New York where he taught for 23 years until his move to California
in 1987.
