Biography/Administrative History

Born in Spain 1930, Ellacuría joined the Jesuits in 1947. He was sent to El Salvador where he became a naturalized citizen. Ellacuría worked closely with the philosopher Xavier Zubiri and wrote his 1965 dissertation on Zubiri's philosophy. Ellacuría was president of the University of Central America (Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas), chair of the philosophy department, and editor of several publications. He was a primary proponent of liberation theology, speaking and writing on poverty and oppression in El Salvador regularly contributing to newspapers, and radio and television programs. Ellacuría was murdered 1989 in his home along with five priests, their housekeeper, and her daughter by a right-wing Salvadoran army squad. Robert Lassalle-Klein is Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Philosophy at Holy Names University, Oakland, CA. He received his BA in English Literature from Santa Clara University; M.A., Philosophy, Gonzaga University; Masters of Divinity and Licentiate in Sacred Theology, Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley; Masters in Social Work, School of Social Work, California State University at San Jose; and Ph.D, Graduate Theological Union (1995).His dissertation is "The Jesuit martyrs of the University of Central America : an American Christian university and the historical reality of the reign of God."

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection consists of photocopies of documents arranged by early writings, 1956-63; philosophical writings; theological writings; political essays; works in English translation; writings on the works of Ellacuría and Zubiri; and unpublished writings divided into early 1956-66, province retreat talks, publication of Teología política, course notes and lectures, theological writings, and reflections on the national reality. Included in the collection but not listed on the Inventory are a series of typescript titled short articles or talks, 1978-85. Also included is Ellacuría's 1965 dissertation.
