Physical Description: Details regarding Patrols and activities in the Lafayette Escadrille, which was a French fighter squadron during World War I composed largely of American volunteer pilots. Item 3: Lafayette Escadrille: Log Book, Ledger Form of Flights, Kills, etc. June 1, 1919 to December 15, 1918

Physical Description: Details regarding flights and kills in the Lafayette Escadrille, which was a French fighter squadron during World War I composed largely of American volunteer pilots. The letters “communicate something of the atmosphere and attitudes of that day and the birth of the U.S.Air Force (then officially the Aviation Section, Signal Corps) as a significant military force.” General Condition: Fair. Item 5: Kamikaze Air Attack: Eyewitness Account of Attack on USS Tennessee.

Physical Description: Author: MSGT. Roger M Emmons. A detailed account of the Attack on Pearl Harbor from the perspective on a Marine officer that was onboard at the time of the attack. Includes drawing of the attack on the USS Tennessee and casualty list. General Condition: Fair. Problems: Text block has become detached from back cover. An account of a crew of the 8th US Air Force that worked jointly with the Royal Air Force in a campaign of strategic bombing to damage the German war industry. Item 7: Shademaid.

Physical Description: Author: I. H. Lee Personal account of his experiences as a Navy aviator with Air Group 41. The group symbol was Shademaid. This particular Air Group pioneered night aircraft attacks from the USS Independence carrier. This covers approximately one year (1944-1945) of World War II. General Condition: Excellent. Item 8: Personal Recollections of a Combat Tour in the US Eight Air Force-1944 (Carpetbaggers).

Physical Description: Author: William E. Ebner. Describes missions flown between March 20, 1944 and August 19, 1944. Includes images, pull-out maps, and crew rosters. General Condition: Good. Problems: Tape used to adhere catalog number enclosed two pages, making personalized note from the author difficult to see. D 790 .E2 1998 MSS

Physical Description: Author: Michael Green and Gladys Green. “This book will attempt to provide the reader in words and pictures a very broad and very simple overview of the resulting war in the Pacific…” This book focuses and the US war with the Japanese during World War II from Pearl Harbor until the end of the war. Item 10: Bombing Squadron Six in Action: A Radio-Gunner Looks Back.

Physical Description: Author: James F. Murray. A personal account of the missions/action of Bombing Squadron Six from Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) until after the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Item 11: The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II: Perspectives on the Work of America’s First Military Women Aviators.

Physical Description: Author: Natalie Jeanne Stewart-Smith. A thesis submitted to Washington State University. The study examines the varied attitudes and perceptions which affected the service and acceptance of the WASP who served in the Army Air Force from September 1942 until December 1944 but were civilian pilots rather than military personnel. Item 19: Tiger Ten.

Physical Description: Author: Kenneth Ross. Screenplay owned by Paramount Pictures. There is no indication that this screenplay was filmed and released. May take place during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). NOTE: While the screenplay follows the Flying Tigers of the 1st American Volunteer Group, which was active 1941-1942, the manuscript does not fit into the collection. General Condition: Good. Item 20: Something in the Air (original teleplay).

Physical Description: Author: George Simpson and Neal Burger. Script regarding a flight crew and their encounter with 3 unidentified flying objects during a routine flight to test radar, and the aftermath of the encounter from the perspective of the military flight crew. While it does feature airplanes, the manuscript does not fit into the collection. General Condition: Good. Problems: yellowing along binding edge. PN 1997 .S5 MSS
 

Item 21: Rusty Eagles Segment 1: A Lady Called Fifi.

Physical Description: Author: John Trayne. The scripts for the pilot and first episode of a television series. There is no record that it ever aired. Show is about two men who left the army and took over an airline that has only old World War I airplanes. NOTE: While it features airplanes, it does not appear to fit in with the collection. Item 22: Manhunter: The Deadly Sopwith.

Physical Description: Author: Carey Wilbur. Script from the first season of the television show Manhunter. A Quin Martin Production. NOTE: The script is not about the Sopwith aircraft, rather the aircraft is just the vehicle used by the antagonists of the script. Does not fit in with the collection. General Condition: Excellent. Physical Description: Author: Frederick A. Brown. A summary taken from the original San Diego Junior Chamber of Commerce Aviation Committee Notebook. This records of the founding of the San Diego Aerospace Museum is an effort to document the dedication of the San Diego Junior Chamber of Commerce in establishing an Air Museum in San Diego. Physical Description: Author: D. Christian Gelzer. Master’s Thesis presented to San Diego State University. Biography of Lincoln Beachey, touching upon his contribution to aviation, and his employment by Glenn H. Curtiss. It also explores how Beachey bridged the transition from balloons to airplanes, and what he represented to the general American public and one of the most famous pre-World War I pilots. Physical Description: Author: Glen Edwards. The personal diary of Captain Glen Edwards, detailing his experiences during World War II, from when he joined the Army Air Corps to a few days before his death. He was the principal project pilot for testing the Convair XB-46 prototype. He died during a test flight of the Northrop YB-49. General Condition: Good. Problems: Title ripped from the cover. Item 43: Annals of a Fighter Pilot WW 2: a Brief Outline of Events as they Happened During My Period of Overseas Service.

Physical Description: Author: Robert D. Kruidenier. The writer was enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940, transferred into the United States Air Force in 1942. He was assigned to the Chinese Burma India Theater (CBI) where he served as a fighter in the Chinese American Composite Wing. The article intends to give insight into the condition in China during the war. General Condition: Fair. Problems: Binding prevents full visibility of text. This thesis focuses on the system builder Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, his invention, and the system that he created for the distribution and use of his invention. General Condition: Good. Item 57: David & Goliath: Battle for the Airways. A History of the “Nonsked Airlines” from 1948-1958.

Physical Description: Author: Harold D. Cope (Harold D. “Hal” Cope). “Nonsked” is defined by Meriam-Webster as an air transport carrier that offers service at irregular times, at less frequent interval, and often at lower fares than certificated scheduled services; also: a “nonscheduled” transport plane. A brief examination of the life cycle of the nonsked industry in both the public and government sectors. Also discusses the effect of regulation and legacy airlines on the nonsked industry. Item 58: Technical Preparation of the Airplane “Spirit of St. Louis.”

Physical Description: Author: Donald A. Hall. Details the design, construction, and flight data of the Spirit of St. Louis, commissioned by Charles Lindbergh and constructed by the Ryan Corporation. This includes photographs of the aircraft, and the appropriate data charts. General Condition: Poor. Problems: Pages have yellowed and there is acid migration from the ink onto opposite pages.
