Abstract: Collection includes real estate brochures and plot plans for housing developments throughout the Palos Verdes Peninsula, compiled
by long time Palos Verdes Estates resident and real estate broker Joseph Barnett. The collection documents a signficant period
in the development of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Biographical / Historical
Joseph Barnett (1922-2015) was born in Mebane, North Carolina and moved to the City of Palos Verdes Estates in 1958. After
working as an engineer for Douglas Aircraft, Barnett became a real estate broker in 1962 and stayed involved in real estate
until his passing in 2015. Barnett was a former president of the Palos Verdes Estates Board of Realtors and also served as
director of both the California Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.
Joseph Barnett was also very involved in city government. He served on the City Council for the City of Palos Verdes Estates
from 1966 to 1978 and was mayor from 1968 to 1976. He served on numerous committees for the city, most notable the Planning
Commission where he served for 18 years. Barnett was instrumental in the establishment of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Shoreline
Preserve and in the creation of the city's Neighborhood Compatibility Ordinance.

Arranged alphabetically by folder title; thereunder chronologically, with dated materials followed by undated materials.
Scope and Contents
The Joseph Barnett Real Estate Brochure Collection includes brochures, plot plans, floor plans and price lists for housing
developments on the the Palos Verdes Peninsula and neighboring areas. Some folders include business cards of sales agents,
reprints of newspaper articles, and copies of official subdivision reports. Developers and realtors represented in this collection
include Ray Watt, William Polkinghorn, and William C. Kulow.
In addition to the files on housing developments, the collection also includes bulletins from Kahlo Realty; a membership roster
from the Palos Verdes Estates Board of Realtors; a Palos Verdes Peninsula Center Population Report; graphs and a newspaper
article on Peninsula growth statistics; highway maps issued by the California Division of Highways and brochures for the Rolling
Hills Country Club and South Shores Racquet Club.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
This collection is a gift from Thomas Barnett, son of Joseph Barnett. The processing of this collection was funded in part
by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology
Act, administered by the California State Librarian.
