Background
Doug Moore became a prominent figure in San Diego's
LGBT community after becoming involved with the Oceanside Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) and becoming an organizer for San
Diego Pride in 1977. Moore has been credited with helping to institutionalize Pride, both in San Diego and across the globe.
Moore worked with other
LGBT activists in Boston to create the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Pride, with first met in 1983 with 6 founding cities
(San Diego, Los Angeles, New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Chicago). The organization went on to become InterPride, the
International Association of Lesbian/Gay [Bisexual and Transgender] Pride Coordinators (IAL/GPC). InterPride would go on to
bring Pride parades and festivals to places around the country and around the world. Moore was committed to the preservation
of the history of Pride, compiling an extensive collection of Pride materials from around the globe, including t-shirts, posters,
photographs, buttons, pins, programs, banners, and founding materials of major
LGBT Pride organizations.
