Biographical/Historical note
Sumner Spaulding was born June 14, 1892 in Ionia, Michigan. From 1911 to 1913 Spaulding attended the University of Michigan
and in 1916 he graduated with his bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1921 to 1926 Spaulding
traveled and studied in Europe. After Europe, Spaulding worked in the office of Myron Hunt in Pasadena, was a partner in the
firm of Weber, Staunton and Spaulding (1923-1928), and finally a partner in Spaulding, Rex, and DeSwarte (1940-1953). Spaulding’s
more notable projects include: the Catalina casino, the Strathmore Drive Apartments in Los Angeles, and dormitories at the
Pomona Colleges. Later in his career, Spaulding was a lecturer for the architecture department at the University of Southern
California. Sumner Spaulding died at the age of 59, in 1952.
