in spiritualism.

Rufus Brown Bullock (1834-1907) was born in Bethlehem, New York. He supervised building of a telegraph line between New York
and the Southern U.S. and in 1859 was employed by the Adams Express Company (later Southern Express Company), moving to Augusta,
Georgia. During the Civil War, he remained in Georgia, becoming a telegraph expert for the Confederacy. After the war, Bullock
returned to Augusta and resumed his duties at Southern Express company and was also president of the Macon & Augusta Railroad.
In 1868, he was elected governor of Georgia, resigning from the position in 1871. In 1876, Bullock was charged with embezzling
public funds as governor but was acquitted. He then became president of Atlanta Cotton Mills, a trustee of Atlanta University,
and president of Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.
The collection consists of professional and personal correspondence of Rufus B. Bullock, which relate to the embezzlement
charges against him as governor of Georgia, his career in the Republican Party, and his interest in spiritualism. Also included
is a small amount of correspondence of his son, Freeman Bullock. Letters signed to Rufus B. Bullock from U.S. presidents include
one from Benjamin Harrison, 1892 June 14 (HM 28796); and three from William McKinley, 1888 October and November (HM 28798
(1 & 2)), and 1893 November 13 (HM 28797).
This finding aid was created in 2022 by Melissa Haley as part of the American Presidential Papers Project with enhanced description
of the presidential material present. The items had been assembled physically and arranged by Huntington Library former staff
in the mid-20th century.
Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by sender.
