Biographical / Historical

Judy Yung (1946-2020) was a historian of Chinese American history working in the Bay Area. Born and raised in San Francisco's Chinatown, Yung earned a BA from San Francisco State University and an MA in Library Science from University of California, Berkeley. Her first job was as a librarian at the Chinatown Branch of the San Francisco Public Library, where she became keenly aware of the lack of materials about Chinese Americans and specifically Chinese Americans women. As a librarian with the Oakland Public Library, she helped build up the first Asian American branch library in the United States. Collaborating with Him Mark Lai and Genny Lim, Yung published Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910-1940 (Chinese Cultural Center of San Francisco, 1980) to preserve the Chinese poems carved into the walls of the Angel Island Immigration Station by former detainees. Yung's connection to Angel Island was a personal one, as her father had been detained on the island in 1921. Yung began collecting oral histories as part of the Island project and soon embarked on a much larger oral history project to document the experiences of Chinese American women. In 1981, she received funding from the Women's Educational Equity Program to organize an exhibit on Chinese American women, which she then expanded into Chinese Women of America: A Pictorial History (University of Washington Press, 1986). Yung returned to UC Berkeley to obtain a PhD in Ethnic Studies in 1994 with her dissertation, which she expanded into Unbound Feet: A Social History of Chinese Women in San Francisco (University of California Press, 1995). In 1990, she was hired as a professor in American Studies at UC Santa Cruz. There she taught Asian American history, women's studies, and oral history courses until her retirement in 2004. Yung continued to research and write on the experiences and social history of Chinese Americans, publishing Unbound Voices: A Documentary History of Chinese Women in San Francisco (University of California Press, 1999); Chinese American Voices: From the Gold Rush to the Present, co-edited with Gordon Chang and Him Mark Lai (University of California Press, 2006); San Francisco's Chinatown (Arcadia Publishing, 2006); and Angel Island: Immigrant Gateway to America , co-authored with Erika Lee (Oxford University Press, 2010). In 2003, Yung married Eddie Fung, the only Chinese American soldier captured by the Japanese during World War II. She recorded over fifty hours of interviews with Fung, resulting in the publication of The Adventures of Eddie Fung: Chinatown Kid, Texas Cowboy, Prisoner of War (University of Washington Press, 2007). After Fung's death in 2018, Yung moved back to San Francisco's Chinatown to continue her public history work, where she passed away in December 2020.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists mainly of oral histories and research files gathered throughout the span of historian Judy Yung's career. Beginning in the 1970s, the collection mainly includes research files and oral histories from Yung's two research fields: Angel Island and Chinese American history. Much of the collection is made up of files Yung assembled on these two fields, containing scans of primary resources, book chapters, written first-hand accounts, and photographs. Series 1 focuses on Yung's personal papers and background. Series 2-8 stem from Yung's decades-long involvement with Angel Island and includes files on her collaboration with Him Mark Lai and Genny Lim on the engraved poetry left behind by detainees on the island; documents about advocacy efforts for preserving the history of the Immigration Station; and research and drafts of Yung's books on Angel Island. Series 9-16 include research on Chinese American history; correspondence and drafts of Yung's books on Chinese American history; and biographical information about Yung's husband, Eddie Fung. Series 17 contains papers about Yung's long-time collaborator Him Mark Lai and Series 18 covers her time as a professor at UC Santa Cruz. A large portion of the collection is dedicated to Yung's oral history work, especially the Chinese Women of America Project, which Yung directed during the 1980s. Series 9 contains paper files and original recordings of the roughly 260 oral histories Yung and her team conducted. Approximately 150 additional oral histories recorded by Yung and her colleagues are included throughout the collection.

Series 2. Poetry on Angel Island 1976-2019

Scope and Contents

Yung's work on the history of the Angel Island Immigration Station began during the 1970s when she, along with Him Mark Lai and Genny Lim, worked to translate and annotate some of the poems left behind by detainees on Angel Island. This project resulted in the publication of Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910-1940 (University of Washington Press, 1980) although work on translating the poems has continued as more inscriptions are uncovered. Materials in this series include images of poem inscriptions, translations, press for the release of Island, and information about interviews with Angel Island detainees done in conjunction with Yung, Lai, and Lim's work on the poems. Research files on poetry at other immigration detention centers are also included. Building off of Yung, Lai, and Lim's work in the 1970s, the series also includes guides from 2004 and 2019 on interpreting and analyzing the poems.

Series 8. Angel Island Research Files 1970s-2010s

Scope and Contents

Through her work on Angel Island, Yung assembled extensive research files on the history of Angel Island. This series includes copies of primary sources, such as immigration files and newspaper clippings that Yung found in various archives around California and the West Coast. The series also contains secondary sources not written by Yung in the form of articles, book chapters, and dissertations about Angel Island. Other files of note include some research on the history of Ellis Island in New York, Yung's own work compiling statistics about Angel Island immigration, and copies of the annual reports to the Commissioner General of Immigration (later Immigration and Naturalization Service) during the years that the Angel Island Immigration Station was active.

Arrangement

Yung's original file names and order were maintained wherever possible. Files on related topics tend to be grouped together although there is some repetition throughout the series.

Series 9. Chinese Women of America Project 1980s

Arrangement

The series is arranged into four subseries based around the work done for the Chinese Women of America project: oral histories, photos, research, and exhibit.

Scope and Contents

Series 9 contains materials from Yung's directorship of the Chinese Women of America (CWA) project. In 1981, she received a grant from the Women's Educational Equity Program to conduct research and organize an exhibit on the experiences of Chinese American women. For the exhibit, Yung conducted oral history interviews, gathered historical photos, and performed research in archives around the United States. Following the exhibit, Yung expanded her work and published Chinese Women of America: A Pictorial History (University of Washington Press, 1986). Materials in the series include oral histories transcripts, scans of primary resources, newspapers, photographs, and cassette tapes.

Oral Histories

Conditions Governing Access

Series 9, subseries 1 is closed while the copyright for the interviews is being determined.

Arrangement

Judy Yung's numbering system is used in the paper files and the cassette tapes. Each interview has a number (1-261) used to identify both the paper files and A/V materials.

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the series is devoted to the 261 oral history interviews that Yung and her team conducted with Chinese American women around the United States. Each interview has a paper file containing interview translations, content logs, release forms, correspondence, and background research. In addition to the paper files, Yung's original cassette tapes are included along with some CD versions of the interviews. Also included are index cards Yung used to keep track of interviewees' contact information and interview number. Although the documentation is in English, some interviews were conducted in Chinese.

Series 13. Book: The Adventures of Eddie Fung: Chinatown Kid, Texas Cowboy, Prisoner of War 2008

Biographical / Historical

Eddie Fung (1922-2018) was a second-generation Chinese American born and raised in San Francisco's Chinatown. As a young man, he moved to Texas to be a cowboy before enlisting in the US Army. On the way to the Philippines, his unit was captured by the Japanese and sent to Burma to build the Burma-Siam railway under slave labor conditions–an experience later dramatized in the 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai. Fung was a prisoner of war for forty-two months and the only Chinese American soldier captured by the Japanese during World War II. He married Judy Yung in 2003 and the pair recorded over 50 hours of oral history interviews about his life, which eventually led to their book, The Adventures of Eddie Fung: Chinatown Kid, Texas Cowboy, Prisoner of War (University of Washington Press, 2007).

Scope and Contents

Series 13 contains materials about Yung's husband, Eddie Fung, many of which were used by Yung to write The Adventures of Eddie Fung: Chinatown Kid, Texas Cowboy, Prisoner of War . A large portion of the series focuses on the oral history Yung recorded with her husband during the early 2000s–including over 50 hours of recordings and transcripts of their conversations. Also included in the series are photographs from throughout Fung's life; other oral histories Fung gave throughout his life; and information about the 2nd Battalion, 131st Field Artillery, 36th Infantry Division–the so-called "Lost Battalion" of which Fung was a part of. Also included are notes and recordings of book talks given by the pair and correspondence with the University of Washington Press.

Series 16. Chinese American History Research Files 1980s-2010s

Scope and Contents

Through her work on Chinese American history, Yung assembled extensive research files. This series includes copies of primary sources about Chinese Americans, including newspaper clippings, written accounts, and photographs. The series also contains secondary sources in the form of articles, book chapters, and dissertations about Chinese Americans. Primary resource files are grouped around topics such as prostitution, immigration, World War II, and employment. Publications from the Chinese Historical Society of America and other organizations working in Chinese American history are included towards the end of the series. Although the series does cover Chinese Americans around the country, the majority of the materials focuses demographically on women and geographically on the San Francisco Bay Area. Yung's original folder titles and labels retained where possible.

Series 17. Him Mark Lai Files 1925-2009

Biographical / Historical

Him Mark Lai (1925-2009) was the eldest child of parents who immigrated to America during the period of Chinese Exclusion. He was a scholar and activist considered the "Dean of Chinese American history", whose involvement in teaching established much of the groundwork for which Chinese America would be understood and the way in which further research would occur. Lai studied engineering in college and worked at Bechtel Power Corporation for thirty years, but he also had a lifelong interest in history, dedicating work and service to the Chinese American community.

Related Materials

The Him Mark Lai papers and research files at the Ethnic Studies Library of UC Berkeley consist of over 500 linear feet of material relating to his research, professional activities, writings, and personal papers. The Him Mark Lai papers at Stanford University's Special Collections and University Archives include materials about his family's history and his parents' immigration to the United States.

Scope and Contents

Series 17 includes materials about Judy Yung's colleague and collaborator Him Mark Lai. Included are research files about Lai's family history that Yung was assisting him with; oral histories of Lai; documents relating to Lai's memorial service in 2009; and correspondence about efforts to rename the Chinatown Branch Library after Lai following his death.
