Biographical Note

The Society of Friends of André-Marie Ampère was founded June 12, 1930, on the initiative of Paul Janet, Academy of Sciences, Director of the Graduate School of Electricity. Its purpose is to perpetuate the memory of André-Marie Ampère by any means it deems appropriate, including conferences, publications, and scholarships. Its head office is in Poleymieux (Rhone). Bern Dibner was a member of the society. Ampère was a French physicist and mathematician who is generally regarded as one of the main founders of the science of classical electromagnetism, which he referred to as "electrodynamics." The SI unit of measurement of electric current, the ampere, is named after him.

Scope and Content

The majority of the collection is correspondence (both originals and copies) regarding the society, their membership, and their activities. It is arranged alphabetically by author and then addressee. Participants include several prominent engineers and scientists including Bern Dibner, Alfred Castelnau, Karl K. Darrow, Louis Domenach, Harold S. Geneen, David Landau, L. Pearce Williams, and Christian V. Pellier. Much of the collection is written in French. This material is noted on the folders.
There is also one folder of material, including correspondence, manuscripts, proofs, invoices and images related to the production of the booklet "André-Marie Ampère." Also a copy of a talk about Ampère written by Bern Dibner and one folder of ephemera.
