Biographical/Historical Note

Pascal Sébah opened his Constantinople (Istanbul) photography studio, which he later named El Chark, in 1857. It became one of the most successful studios in the city. He subsequently established a studio in Cairo in 1873. When Sébah suffered a brain hemorrage in 1883, his brother Cosmi, already a photographer with his own business, and Sébah's sixteen year-old son, Jean, took over the firm. Jean went into partnership with Policarpe Joaillier in 1888, under the name Sébah and Joaillier, while Cosmi continued to run the old studio. Sébah and Joaillier acquired the negatives of Abdullah frères in 1899. Later renamed Photo Sébah, the firm remained in business until 1952.

Scope and Content of Collection

Taken between 1865 and 1875, the sixteen albumen photographs in the collection depict views of the Turkish city of Bursa and its monuments. Located across the sea of Marmara from Istanbul, Bursa was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. Included are six panoramic views of the city and interior and exterior views of the Ulu Cami, Yesil and Murad I mosques, the Yildirim Beyazit mosque and tomb, and the tombs of Cem Sultan, Mehmed I, and Osman Bey. Also included is one photograph with the handwritten caption "Fontaine dans le vieux palais du Serail," most likely by Abdullah frères.
The photographs are pasted on eight mounts, recto and verso. The mounts are numbered sequentially on both sides from 191 to 206. The photographs appear to be part of a mock-up for an illustrated book. For additional photographs bearing numbers sequential to those in this collection see Special Collections accession no. 2004.R.44 (Views of Asia Minor).
Most of the photographs are captioned and numbered in the negative in French, and signed: P. Sébah. Additional French captions, either handwritten or typeset, are pasted on the mounts below the images. Titles are taken from the captions in the negatives, except where noted.
