Historical Note
In 1977, three fraternities were operating at the University of San Diego: Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Theta, and Tau Kappa
Epsilon. Also in 1977, USD colonized its first sorority Alpha Delta Pi. By 1987, the operating fraternities were Phi Kappa
Theta, Sigma Chi, and Sigma Pi. The operating sororities were Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Delta Pi, and Zeta. 422 students participated
among the six organizations.
In 2000, the sororities were:
- Alpha Delta Pi, chartered in 1978
- Gamma Phi Beta, chartered in 1983
- Alpha Phi, chartered in 1989
- Kappa Kappa Gamma, chartered in 1997.
The fraternities were:
- Phi Kappa Theta, chartered in 1961
- Sigma Chi, chartered in 1984
- Delta Tau Delta, chartered in 1990
- Lambda Chi Alpha, chartered in 1995
- Sigma Phi Epsilon, working toward a charter.
Greek life at the University of San Diego is committed to five core values: social justice and selfless service, high social
standards, leadership, academic excellence and sisterhood/brotherhood. It has never operated with Greek housing, but meeting
facilities and office space are available to the organizations. Fraternity and Sorority Life falls within Student Learning
Involvement and Changemaking (SLIC). Chapters have been involved in the Western Regional Greek Conference, National Panhellenic
Conference and North-American Interfraternity Conference. Greek Week is one of the major fraternity and sorority life events.
One goal of Greek Week is to raise funds for a selected organization.
By 2019, Greek life had expanded significantly with nine sororities and eight fraternities. Approximately 2,000 students participate
in fraternity and sorority life. Phi Kappa Theta remains as the longest operating USD fraternity. Alpha Delta Pi continues
as the longest operating USD sorority.
