Abstract: The Missionary Rest Colony on Mission Road, Glendale, CA (c.1920-2005) was built as a community for visiting Christian missionaries, regardless of ecclesiastical denomination or nationality. In 2005, MEK Associates, Inc owned the property and had the buildings deconstructed to support a healthcare company expansion project. This collection consists of original and photocopied documents associated with the 2005 defense of the Missionary Rest Colony’s retention within the Glendale community.

Biography/Administrative History

Jennie E Suppes founded the Missionary Rest Colony on Mission Road, Glendale, CA c.1920. Her goal was to build a whole community for visiting missionaries, regardless of ecclesiastical denomination or nationality. Suppes retired in the 1950s and transferred ownership to the Christian and Missionary Alliance. The CMA owned the colony until the 1970s. In 2005, MEK Associates, Inc owned the property and had the buildings deconstructed to support a healthcare company expansion project. Local community members including Alan Leib and Donald Cram attempted to save the Missionary Rest Colony.

Scope and Content of Collection

This collection consists of original and photocopied documents associated with the 2005 defense of the Missionary Rest Colony’s retention within the Glendale community. Specific records include a Los Angeles Times article; photocopies of documents Donald Cram and David Bundy gathered; and a photocopy of a scrapbook kept by Christian and Missionary Alliance retired missionaries.
